Huidige aanpak
De huidige aanpak van de armoedeproblematiek is gericht op een benadering vanuit problemen en systeemdenken. Armoede en bijbehorende armoedestress is een multidimensionaal probleem waarbij schaamte een zeer belangrijke belemmerende factor is. In de huidige aanpak wordt te snel overgegaan op protocollen en procesmatige oplossingen. Om te komen tot een duurzame en adequate oplossing is een andere mindset nodig bij alle betrokken partijen.
Dialoog en veerkracht
In iedere relatie die zich op de lange termijn richt, is het nodig dat de gesprekken de vorm van een dialoog hebben: afwisselend elkaar vertellen en elkaar echt horen. Dit geldt ook voor de relatie waarin een probleem het centrale thema is, in de hulpverlening. Zonder eerst te zorgen dat er echte dialoog (wat ik 'het gesprek' noem) en dus connectie is tussen de klant en de hulpverlener een duurzame oplossing moeilijker te bereiken. De empowerment by connection strategie bouwt aan een stevig fundament voor vertrouwen in een zeer vroeg stadium en geeft authentieke ruimte voor duiding en erkenning van schaamte. Dit versterkt de noodzakelijke veerkracht van de klant.
Inclusie
Daarnaast zie ik hoe wezenlijk belangrijk inclusie is, die ik als volgt definieer: het bijeenbrengen van complementaire kwaliteiten en inzichten vanuit verschillende perspectieven. Inclusie bevordert de veerkracht in een organisme. En ook hier is het dialoog essentieel, voordat instrumenten worden ingezet. Dit zijn wetten die ik leerde kennen tijdens mijn studie en loopbaan.
Ik ondersteun nationaal en internationaal professionals en bedrijven die prioriteit (willen) maken van armoedebestrijding om deze empowerment by connection strategie te duiden en te vertalen naar de juiste aanpak voor alle betrokken stakeholders.
Daarnaast ben ik met veel plezier keynote speaker op deze thema’s en op het gebied van Good Governance waar mijn thema’s ‘dialoog, inclusie, openheid en veerkracht’ ruim aan de orde komen.

Multidimensional problems need understanding first before moving to measurements and policy making. These are my domain, for instance poverty and poverty stress. Shame is a very important disruptive variable in the process of solving extreme debts.
In any relationship with an eye on the long term, it is necessary that conversations take the form of a dialogue: alternately talking to each other and hearing each other. This also applies to the relationships in which a problem is the central theme, such as (health)care. Genuine dialogue helps participants to open up in a problem situation. Resilience can arise again, with which problems can be solved in a sustainable manner. Connection is crucial and fundamental for building a trustful relationship in a very early stage and gives authentic space for understanding and recognition of the shame. The empowerment by connection strategy strengthens the client's ability for problem solving.
In addition, I see how essential inclusion is, which I define as follows: bringing together complementary qualities and insights from different perspectives. Inclusion promotes resilience in an organism. And here, too, dialogue is essential before instruments are deployed. These are laws I learned during my studies and career.
As a poverty and inclusion expert I help municipalities, social organizations, enterprises and NGO’s in the Netherlands and abroad to manage their poverty reduction policy effectively through empowerment by connection.
I also enjoy being a keynote speaker on these topics and the field of Good Governance where my themes 'dialogue, inclusion, openness and resilience' are widely discussed.
